The Bowen Technique was devised in Australia in the 1950s by Tom Bowen. He was an ordinary man with no formal medical training. He worked at a cement factory factory in Geelong, Victoria.
He soon found that when his colleagues became injured or suffered pain, he could quickly alleviate it by making small movements to their muscle tissue. His treatments were so effective that word of mouth spread quickly, and within a few years he gave up his work at the factory to run his own clinic.
By the 1970s, he was treating 13,000 patients a year (documented by the Victorian Government Webb report over a 27 weeks period ) with an 80-90% success rate.
Tom Bowen taught his technique to a number of practitioners, who have continued his work since his death in 1982.
The Bowen Technique was first brought to the UK in 1993 and clinical studies show it has impressive results on a variety of conditions. It is now a growing movement worldwide, with training programmes for practitioners set up in Australia, North America and the UK.
The Bowen Association UK, which is affiliated to Bowtech Australia, is a member of the British Complementary Medicine Association.
